International Elderly Day-2014 Celebrated

The International Elders Day was celebrated with joy and gaiety on 01.10.2014 in the premises of Shakti Old Age Home, Rayagada. Mr.Girija Tripathy, the Lecture of Rayagada College attended as Chief Guest. The function was started with the lightening of lamp by Senior inmate Mr. Krishna Chandra Achrya(87 Yrs.) and followed with opening song by the Students of Rayagada College. The General Secretary of Shakti Organisation Mr. Akhil Ranjan Panda welcomed the participants and briefed the audience about the importance of the day. The theme of the 2014 commemoration is “Leaving No One Behind: Promoting a Society for All” as declared by United Nation. The Indian Government also declared the theme of the day as “Hamari Sanskriti Ki Hai Pehchan, Buzurgon ki Suraksha Aur Samman”.

Mr. Panda also spoke aboutMaintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007’ and different Govt. Schemes and facilities, available for the elderly people.

Mr. Tripathy in his speech said that, now days it is common practice among youth that, as they became capable of handling themselves and earn sufficient money, they often turn a blind eye towards their elderly parents who are need of assistance. The elders are abused in the home. So, moral education is the need of the hour. One should not forget what their parents have done when they were as helpless as an old person. He emphasised the old Indian tradition, where the elders were regarded with respect.

Mr. Panda, appealed all to take an oath to not be apathetic towards our ageing parents and treat them with respect and care which they deserve.

During the function the NCC cadets of Rayagada College performed 4 nos of Dance programme and seven students sing songs to entertain the old age Inmates of Shakti Old Age Home.

50 NCC cadets (Boys) and 20 NCC cadets(Girls) participated in the programme. At the end Mr.Gunanidhi Bauri, the Counsellor of Old Age Home extended vote of thanks to all.
